Amy Marron and Rachel Daly were the shining stars on Sunday night as St. John’s downed the North Dakota State Bisons 5-0. Marron was a force on the night with a hat trick and two assists, using her head each time she scored. Daly continued to fill up the stat sheet with two goals herself; she now has six goals on the year.
The first half was all St. John’s as they were extremely aggressive in pressuring the NDSU goaltender, Sierra Bonham. The Johnnies peppered Bonham from all angles with eighteen shots. The aggression paid off, as the Johnnies would enter halftime with a 3-0 lead.
Amy Marron lead the goal scoring with a header on a corner kick by Deanna Murino. Marron fought through a pack of Bison in the box for the score and her first goal on the year. Marron was involved in the next goal as she passed the ball 30 yards to the rising star on this team, Rachel Daly. Daly received the pass as the Bison’s goalie, Bonham, was closing on the ball and Daly chipped the ball right over Bonham’s head for her fifth goal on the season. Junior Caitlyn McLaughlin would be credited with the assist as she kicked the ball into the box and Marron came surging into the box and dove at the ball and headed it again into the net for her second goal on the season and on the night.
“I’m confident in Rachel [Daly],” said Marron, “I know she will be there when I try and set her up with the ball. We worked hard in the offseason and it’s all coming together now.”
The second half was just like the first as St. John’s continued to hustle and be aggressive. Within minutes of the half beginning Amy Marron was back at it as Rachel Hoffman assisted her on a cross from the corner, as yet again Marron used her head to put the ball in the back of the net. Rachel Daly would again show her dominance on the field as Amy Marron assisted her again on her second goal of the night as she hit the ball just right to get it over Bonham’s head once more.
The Red Storm will next play at Central Connecticut State University on September 6th.
“I’m very happy with our performance so far after the way we struggled last year,” said head coach Ian Stone, “It’s a great way to start our year off, being 4-0, with the challenging games we have up coming.”
