St. John’s track & field concluded the 2016 indoor season with a strong showing in Beantown. They finished third place the IC4A/ECAC Championships this past weekend at Boston University. The weekend was a great accomplishment for the St. John’s team as they broke school-records, an individual and relay title according to the press release.
For the second year in a row, senior Stephanie Van Pelt defended her title at the ECAC Championships in the 1,000-meter race, taking first place with a PR of 2:34.07 time. Claire Mooney and Pariis Garcia both also set new records in the 400-meter dash.
“Our team competed at a very high level all weekend long. Stephanie’s 1,000-meter time is one of the fastest in the nation and just missed the meet record by four thousandths of a second,” head coach Jim Hurt said. “Claire is now third all-time on the Irish indoor list and Pariis is second all-time on the Puerto Rican list. We’re so proud of these young women and all they have accomplished. It has been a very fun day!”
For two weeks back to back, the Red Storm took a win in the 4×400-meter event. The relay team senior Shenika King, Garcia, senior Raquel Ricketts and Mooney came in with the fastest time all seaon, 3:37.86. As for the 400-meter, Mooney and Garcia broke the school record with a time of 53.53 seconds with places of third and fourth. All together they came in with the 38th-fastest time in NCAA Division 1.
Sophomore Maya Stephens finished top-10 in both the 60-meter and 200-meter dash. She came in 8th place with a time of 7.74 seconds in the 60-meter and PR’d in the 200-meter with a time of 24.08 seconds.
As for the field events, sophomore Nyla Woods came in second place in the weight throw with a toss of 18.38-meters. Senior Ann Dargin also finished fifth with a toss of 17.32-meters.
