An explosion outside a packed football stadium at the University of Oklahoma killed one person on Saturday night. According to the Associated Press, authorities said the death appeared to be a suicide.
The blast occurred in a traffic circle approximately 100 yards from Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. The explosion could be heard by some of the 84,000 people attending a game there. However, according to university President David Boren, no one inside the stadium was in any danger.
“We are apparently dealing with an individual suicide, which is under full investigation,” Boren said in a statement.
According to the A.P., there was no information about the person who was killed and no other injuries were reported.
The area surrounding the stadium was searched by bomb-sniffing dogs and a police bomb squad detonated explosives found at the site.
The explosion occurred shortly before 8 p.m., according to the A.P. The area west of the stadium was cordoned off by the police and no one was allowed out of the game for approximately a half an hour after the explosion.
The Sooners’ game against Kansas State continued.
