Men’s Soccer
Simon Schoendorf, Yohance Marshall and Dane Brenner of USF and Robert Cavicchia of Syracuse took home Big East conference honors this week. Schoendorf received Offensive Player of the Week, Marshall received defensive honors, Brenner was name Goalkeeper of the Week and Cavicchia was selected as Rookie of the Week.
Schoendorf led a 3-1 win over DePaul and a 1-0 shutout against St. John’s this week. He lent a hand in every goal scored by USF and scored the goal that led the Red Storm to their first loss, breaking their nine-game winning streak, of the conference season.
Marshall led the defense of USF, holding DePaul and St. John’s to less than 10 shots per game. Marshall also held MAC Hermann Trophy candidate Matt Groenwald to only two shots.
With the help of Marshall, goalie Brenner was faced with only four shots all week. He also received his third shutout against the Red Storm for the season.
Cavicchia led the Syracuse to its second win over Cincinnati in a 2-1 victory and, in the process, making his career-high 11 saves. The only goal made by Cincinnati was the result of a converted penalty shot.
Women’s Soccer
Meghan Connolly of Marquette has been named this weeks’ co-Offensive Player of the Week. Connolly contributed nine points, giving Marquette a victory of 4-3 over Cincinnati and Louisville at 2-1. She scored three goals against UC, registered an assist, and contributed to all four goals on Cincinnati. Connolly tied the game with Louisville, sending it into overtime with Marquette winning.
Katie Thorlakson of Notre Dame received Offensive Player of the Week along with Defensive Player of the Week. This is the third time this season and the sixth time in her career that she has received this honor. She posted a total of two goals and five assists against UConn with a 4-0 win and PC with a 6-0 win. She is now the fifth Irish and the 17th NCAA Division I player to reach 50 goals and 50 assists and has reached the 10th time she made five or more points in her career.
Candace Chapman was named Defensive Player of the Week. Chapman and the defense of Notre Dame kept UConn and PC from making any goals in a 4-0 and 6-0 victory. Chapman helped by posting one goal and two assists.
Nora Crawford of Rutgers received Goalkeeper of the Week. She recorded two shutouts resulting in a 1-0 against Syracuse and a 3-0 against St. Johns. Crawford recorded two saves against Syracuse and two saves against St. Johns.
Rookie of the Week goes to Alicia Hall of Rutgers. She contributed to Rutgers getting over Syracuse and St. John’s with her first two goals of the season; the second against St. John’s
Volleyball
Senior outside hitter Lena Ustymenko of Louisville tallied 29 kills at Cincinnati, a career-high, on national television and clearly earned this weeks Player of the Week for the third time this year.
She hit .413, 15 digs, one block assist and one service ace in the four game win against Cincinnati.
She hit .314, with 321 kills, two block assist and 16 digs at Xavier in a 3-1 win.
USF setter Kate Verhoff won Rookie of the Week. She tallied 60 and 15 digs in a five game win against Jacksonville. She also hit.8-with 40 assists against Georgetown.
Verhoff tallied 136 total assists, 13 kills with no errors and finishing out the week with a .542 hitting percentage.
