Big East Rookie of the Year O’Brian White scored the game-winning goal in the 13th minute, as the sixth-ranked Connecticut men’s soccer team won its second consecutive Big East Tournament title with a 1-0 victory over league newcomer South Florida at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium Sunday in front of 2,511 raucous fans.
Connecticut (15-3-1) takes home the tournament crown after winning the Big East regular season title in the Blue Division.
En route to the championship, UConn defeated Georgetown, 5-0, in quarterfinal action on Nov. 6.
It also topped St. John’s, 1-0, in the semifinal round on Friday night.
White’s goal would stand as the lone score of the game, despite coming just 12:38 into the contest. UConn midfielder Dori Arad played the ball to Stanley Ford, who crossed the ball inside from the outer area on the left side of the penalty box.
White was waiting in the middle of green jerseys in the center of the goalmouth and managed to get a head on the crossed ball.
He directed it into the lower portion of the goal as South Florida (12-6-1) keeper Dane Brenner tried to make the diving save.
The Bull’s best chance of the game came with 3:46 left in the first half. Jordan Seabrook fired the ball across the grain, just inches wide right of the post and UConn’s goalie Adam Schuerman.
Schuerman finished the day with three saves.
